DAVE
MAGARITY: Can you please tell where you find all of your
three-point shooters? It seems as though every season you have
one of the best in the nation, with Brendan Plavich being the
latest.
BOBBY LUTZ: We recruit shooters. Our staff identifies,
follows, evaluates and recruits shooters. The success we have
had with guards has made it easier to recruit other guards.
MAGARITY: Your list of basketball accolades is very
impressive, but was is the one thing that you are most proud
of as a coach?
LUTZ: First, to follow the success of all my players
after they finish school. Second, all the championship teams
I've had the privilege of coaching -- high school, NAIA and
here at Charlotte.
MAGARITY: What accomplishment are you most proud of off
the court?
LUTZ: Carolinas' "Father of the Year" in 2002 because
it recognizes Natalie and Christine, my two wonderful
daughters, and my wife Janet, who is the ultimate coach's
wife.
MAGARITY: I understand that you were once quite the
softball player. What game stands out for you and who are some
other college coaches that -- you know of -- that have
excelled in softball or baseball?
LUTZ: In 1973, we won the National Junior Championship
in New York (I was 15) and then I was a member of the men's
team that won the National Championship in Parma, Ohio (same
year). Our 1981 team was the best of all time. It would take
pages to tell you everything about that team (8 Hall of Famers).
Bill Jones, former Jacksonville State basketball coach, was a
great softball player.
MAGARITY:: Charlotte is one of the teams leaving
Conference USA. What does this mean for your program and what
are your thoughts on the changing landscape (Conference
realignment) in college basketball?
LUTZ: It's reality we must deal with. C-USA has been
great for us but the A-10 is the absolute perfect move for us,
since our football team is the Carolina Panthers. We should be
in the top 4 of the A-10, we recruit the east coast and there
are many basketball powers in the league with great tradition.
Everyone must do what's best and C-USA is going with football
schools -- the A-10 is where we belong.
