DAVE
MAGARITY: You were a big part of Jimmy Calhoun's staff in
the classic college setting at Uconn. Storrs, CT and the
Nation's Capital are very different. Did you have to change
your recruiting style in any way?
KARL HOBBS: No. I continue to take the same approach
that I did when I was at UConn. The only differences are that
I am taking that approach at a different school as a head
coach.
MAGARITY: The Atlantic 10 is in the midst of transition
with Richmond recently entering the league and more changes to
come. It looks like the league will only get stronger. What
are your thoughts?
HOBBS: I think the addition of Charlotte and Saint
Louis will make the Atlantic 10 stronger and allow the
Atlantic 10 to send more teams the the NCAA Tournament. Both
Saint Louis and Charlotte have great tradition and their
programs have enjoyed success on the basketball court. They
will be great additions to the league.
MAGARITY: As a coach, I always like watching teams that
play with passion and your teams play with a lot of passion
and intensity. Is this trait something you identify in the
recruiting process?
HOBBS: No, not necesssarily. I think you try to recruit
kids based on their talent and their potential and if theyšre
good people.
MAGARITY: You look like you can run the floor. Has anyone
challenged the coach in practice?
HOBBS: No. My playing days are over. Now it's all about
coaching.
MAGARITY: Aside from coach Calhoun, who else has had
the greatest impact on your coaching style?
HOBBS: Bob Brown, who I worked for at Boston University
for three years. I think hešs one of the best basketball minds
Išve been around and we do a lot of the same things that he
taught me.
