OU's Kampe makes 'sexy coaches' list
By Mark Snyder

March 18, 2004

Though it's not exactly what he envisioned, Oakland University coach Greg Kampe got his own dose of March Madness this week.

Kampe, whose team was eliminated March 7 in the first round of the Mid-Continent Conference men's basketball tournament, was named one of CollegeInsider.com's 50 sexiest coaches.

"I got an e-mail when it was announced and I thought it was a joke," Kampe said Wednesday. "My wife said, 'Are there only 51?' It's a good thing. Let's just say I needed a humorous moment."

Around the OU athletic offices, speculation ran unchecked. Was it the limp Kampe dragged around all season, the need for off-season knee surgery? Was it his former trademark, the mop of actual hair many believed to be a toupee? Or his self-deprecating humor?

"They had a list for the best-dressed, and the way I dress for games (a pullover windbreaker and black pants), there was no way I was getting on," he said. "They did the 50 eligible bachelors, and I didn't qualify for that."

The word is starting to get around. One neighbor driving by Kampe's house spotted him in the yard, cleaning up, ahem, after the dog. She stopped and said: "It that how you got that sexy?"

But the hammer has yet to drop -- from his players.

"They probably will be on my back about it," said Kampe, 48. "Especially Cortney Scott. He's not afraid to say something."
